The Round Tower
Location: Churchyard of St. Patrick Church of Ireland
The early monastery at Armoy is reputed to have been founded by a disciple of St. Patrick - St. Olcan, this is widely believed, although can not necessarily be established as fact.
The round tower of Armoy was built as a free standing bell tower in the 11th or 12th century. 800 years later, in 1843 the upper structure of the tower had to be restored; when the tower was excavated, human bones were found, they were thought to be from previous burials that took place in the surrounding graveyard
The tower was pressed into service as a belfry for Armoy Church of Ireland parish church. After a new bell tower was built beneath the church in 1869, the round tower fell silent again.
The church and tower are barely 10 metres apart
