Armoy History
Early History of Armoy
Armoy which is anglicised from the Irish 'Oirthear Ma', and which translates to 'the east of the plains' is a small village in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, about 9 km south west of Ballycastle and the Western gateway to the Beautful Glens of Antrim.
A settlement had indeed been here since early times and it is said that St Patrick ordained a local man called St Olcan into his Christian mission who's eclesiastical settlement was adjacent to where Armoy's famous Round Tower sits.
Armoy was an important Centre within the Ancient Celtic Kingdom known as 'Dalriada' which dates back to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD
